Pro bono lawyers and free legal help in Oregon

Legal aid, volunteer lawyers, nonprofit programs and law firms with documented pro bono participation.

Start with your county and legal issue

Find a published regional legal-aid intake route for every one of Oregon’s 36 counties, plus specialized legal assistance and volunteer programs.

Free legal assistance depends on income, case type, conflicts and program capacity. Advice clinics and online answers provide limited help; representation requires separate acceptance. Firm participation listings document pro bono work and explain how cases reach the firm. They do not establish an open public intake or a lawyer available today.

Prepare for intake

Have your county, deadlines, court papers and a short description of the problem ready. Ask about income documentation, language assistance, disability accommodations and whether help is advice only or representation. Use the program’s official intake channel for private documents. A directory listing or submitted request does not create an attorney-client relationship or extend a deadline.

The Oregon State Bar pro bono program does not match clients with volunteer lawyers. Its general referral and Modest Means programs charge fees; Modest Means offers reduced rates for eligible cases. Those services are separate from free legal-aid intake.

For criminal charges and other proceedings that may qualify for appointed counsel, contact the court about its application process. See your court’s contact and procedure links and the Bar’s public defender information. Appointment and financial eligibility require a court decision.
