Prison support and reentry in Oregon

Help while in custody, preparation for coming home, and support for people with criminal records.

Start with where you are today

Choose a starting point for yourself or someone you support. Find the responsible office, prepare questions and check the source instructions before applying or traveling.

Shared sources appear in all 36 county filters. Local reentry providers appear only in their recorded areas. This does not guarantee a placement, current intake or benefit eligibility. The county where you need support may differ from your prison location or supervising county.

DOC links describe Oregon state prisons. County jails, federal facilities and youth custody have separate procedures. Ask the responsible facility or your attorney about the applicable route.

Health and safety while in custody

Ask facility staff how to request care. For an urgent medical or safety concern in custody, alert on-site staff through the facility emergency process. Use the separate reporting route for abuse or misconduct; this website does not receive or monitor reports.

Staying connected with family and supporters

Confirm the correct institution and use DOC instructions for calls, mail, electronic messages and visitor approval. Check current alerts before travel. Use professional communication routes for legal matters.

Education, work preparation and cultural support

Ask the facility which education, work, behavioral-support, religious or cultural programs are available. Keep records of completed training. The food-handler link is for replacing a card after training already completed.

Planning ahead and specialized reentry support

Use release-planning guides to identify practical needs and questions for your release planner. Ask SSA about prerelease arrangements and benefit rules. Veterans can ask ODVA or VA about incarceration-related benefit changes and reentry outreach.

Community reentry providers and housing leads

These providers describe reentry support in specific locations. Ask about their service area, intake, referral requirements and current openings before traveling. For other counties, use the statewide planning, benefits and housing sources alongside local civil legal-aid referrals.

Release papers and supervision

Keep your release papers together. If you have supervision, contact your assigned officer about reporting, your address, treatment and travel conditions.

A place to stay

Start with housing assistance and local referrals. Ask about current openings, screening policies and documents needed. Confirm any supervision-related residence restrictions with your officer.

Health coverage, medication and care

Contact OHP about applying or resuming coverage. Ask your provider or care coordinator about medication continuity, a follow-up appointment and mental health or addiction treatment.

Identification and birth records

Check which documents you already have before paying for replacements. DMV and vital records have different identity requirements. Use the issuing state's process if you were born outside Oregon.

Food and a working phone

Ask ODHS about food-benefit eligibility and application help. Check Lifeline requirements for phone or internet assistance so employers, care teams and support services can reach you.

Work and training

Contact a WorkSource center about appointments, resumes, training and available reentry support. STEP and OCE services have participation limits. Read the hiring-discrimination source if criminal-history questions are a concern.
